By Alyssa Ravenwood, Ravenwood Masks

Originally made for a production of "Scapin" in Portland OR. These masks are now used in theaters and drama schools all over the world. It was the first mask to sell on my website Ravenwood Masks [link] . It sold to a theater company in Japan. It is also the most copied of my mask designs- from honorable "inspired by" influenced masks to downright disgusting plagiarism.

My mask designs for this show were based on traditional Commedia masks of 16th and 17th centuries, combined with elements of German Expressionism. See website for more info about this production's design [link] .

Arlecchino traditionally has a swirl motif on his cheek that in different designs can be a sort of mustache, extended smile or a happy cheek shape. For this production I amped up the stylization of Arlecchino's traditional cheek design and turned it into a full tilt spiral that some have nicknamed a "cinnamon bun cheek."

The version of the script we were using for our production of Scapin was originally written by and for Bill Irwin to play Scapin. Scapin and Arlecchino are two different Commedia characters with different masks. In Irwin's script the character is much more like Arlecchino than Scapino. This suits Bill Irwin's clowning style. Which is why I choose to mask the main character with an Arlecchino mask rather than Scapino.

Arlecchino's traditionally shaped rounded eyebrow was not clever enough to suit the play's character. I added a nontraditional upswing to one of his eyebrows to add a little intelligence. The mask could now play clever and scheming when needed but also has the more traditional innocence and bumbling dimwitted enthusiasm of Arlecchino.
